Running for a Cause

Raising Awareness and Funds for Special Olympics

For many of us, supporting our community means supporting events in a 30-50 mile radius but for two of our agents, it meant much more.

When our Commercial and Personal Lines agent Suzanne Taylor heard about an opportunity to run a fun 5K in Issaquah to raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics, she didn’t think twice and immediately roped her fellow co-worker Sue DeLeon into running with her.

For Suzanne, it meant more than just raising awareness and getting muddy, it hit home – literally. Suzanne’s son was born eight years ago with special needs and at the time the prognosis was quite bleak, not knowing if he would walk, talk, see, hear or live past toddlerhood. But today, Suzanne’s son Kaden is an active, silly, full of life 8 year old who still has his challenges but loves to wrestle, play with his older sister and do what other typical 8 years olds like to do.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Athletes are eligible to participate in the Special Olympics starting at age 8.

Since Suzanne and Sue have similar names and nicknames, and are good friends, they named their team “Sue Squared”. With the help of a trip to the craft store, they made their own costumes for the fun run. Proceeds and the donations they received went toward the Special Olympics. They had so much fun; they will definitely be doing it again next year! Check out more pictures from the FoamFest fun run on our facebook page! BWI Facebook
